thMonday March 12 2012 Medicine of Tomorrow Holistic Individualized Participatory Konstantin Cesnulevicius MD PhD Biologische Heilmittel Heel GmbH Germany Holistic medicinealternative medicine This area of medicine is not new but it is gaining interest in certain medical schoolsThrough the Wormhole Program looks at how we can get around our biases ReductionismHolistic View Reductionism is an analytical approach to turn complex things into smaller parts If you can reduce complex things to smaller parts in the end it will be more understandable This was borne in the Renaissance Descartes came up with it We have gone from cells to understanding DNA to the genetic code to PCR to arrays and now finally we have single molecule deep sequencing It seems that we should know everything but we do not We do not have the overall picture yetTo move to the overall picture we need to move to an analytical approach this is a paradigm shift Now we move from reducing to the overall pictureSo we move into the concept of regulatory networks multicellular networks and it is thought that it will be integrated into the medicine form that will give a holistic view of the patient in which we know and see all the processes in the patient systems medicine Reductionist Biology In this approach you get a lot of dataData o Good part list precise molecular language and a mechanistic understanding of genes and proteins o BUT this leads to overspecialization eg knowing everything about a protein but not knowing how it contributes to the body This leads to lack of integration and a misunderstanding of psysiological systens Next Slide
