Document Summary

Mimm 211 - mycology w/ prof turcotte (10/19/18) Hypersensitivity allergy: the compounds that fungi secrete in order to digest organisms are powerful allergens. Mycotoxicosis: production of toxin in vivo. Mycetismus (mushroom poisoning) pre-formed toxins: from food that you eat, you get sick from pre-formed toxins in the food. Fungal antigens are common precipitators of allergic disease. Evokes an ige hypersensitivity response: mast cell degranulation and histamine release, can cause asthma, rhinitis, pneumonitis and sinusitis. Many types of mold are implicated but aspergillus species are excellent examples of all conditions. Extrinsic alveolitis new name: decomposing hay has high content of thermophilic bacteria and fungi. There are many other occupational versions due to other fungi: manipulating lumber as a profession can also cause asthma from fungi. Uncomplicated asthma usually due to sensitisation to conidial antigens of aspergillus. Another way that aspergillus can cause problems is by mast cell degranulation. The hyphae will directly interact with the mast cells to cause degranulation.
