Case 1: scratched his face in rose garden, developed a rapidly progressive rash over face, eyes and scalp, multiple abscesses developed, high spiking fever, left eye removed due to infection. Treatment: given therapy with an experimental agent, within 24 hours his fever resolved, appetite returned and discharge had decreased. 5 days into therapy almost all swelling had resolved: therapy stopped for lack of supply. 14 year old girl: past medical history: type i diabetes (insulin dependent, presents with one week of left eye pain, and one day of global headache, no other complaints, exam reveals protruding left eye. Intranasal exam shows a black patch inside left nostril: rapidly became comatose.
