MIMM 211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Leishmaniasis, Parasitic Disease, Protozoa

55 views9 pages

Document Summary

Prof mentions that he doesn"t like this slide for one reason: there is an omission. Leishmaniasis was omitted from the previous slide. It is transmitted by sand flies and it kills more people than many of the others mentioned on the previous slide. Many of the parasitic infections are transmitted by flies or other insects. Note also that most of these infections occur near the equator (not in the north or the south) temperatures allow for year-round transmission. In canada, we have a lot of mosquitos but don"t have many ids that are transmitted by them. Winter gets rid of many diseases and this protection barrier is not present closer to the equator. Daly = disability adjusted life years: years of healthy life lost, mostly in the developing world. This chart is about 10 years old but it"s probably not much different today. Hiv is no longer the highest because of advancements in treatment.
