Muar 211 lecture 26 post-minimalism and exam review. From late 20th century to present in america, mainly the bay area. Operas on contemporary subjects ( cnn operas ), orchestral and chamber music. One of the most frequently performed art music composers currently active. Considered post-minimalist : influenced by minimalism but his music is more expressive. Drawn to subjects that are contemporary events in history. Opera about the invention of the atomic bomb. Considered like post minimalism or a second wave of minimalism. Recitative: accompaniment basso continuo, non metrical, harpsicord and cello. No orchestral accompaniment: music follows rhythms and inflections of speech. Aria: metrical, full orchestral accompaniment, text repetition. Baroque era: harpsichord or basso continuo, castrato, no or little cadence. Romantic era: larger role for brass and woodwind (main role, percussion (timpani, complex melodies, extremes in register, moderate degree of chromaticism and dissonance, rubato, long phrases, tonal. Modern era: sprechstimme, highly dissonant, atonal, ametrical, extremely disjunct, non-lyrical melody.
