Grunge
Grunge: mainstream of bohemianism threatened the indie-punk that certain kinds of
consumerism might resist commodiļ¬cation
-Grows out of the early to mid 80s underground indie scenes of LA, DCā€¦
-First use of the term grunge by Green River Mudhoney frontman in 1981 ā€” used to refer to
his own music
-Sub Pop Records (1986) adopts the term to promote Mudhoney and other bands between
1987-1988
-Used as a descriptor rather than a genre designation
-Describes musical sound and look
Pearl Jam ā€” personiļ¬ed the look of grunge (Unkept, disheveledā€¦)
Sub Pop ā€” deļ¬ned Seattle sound (loud, fast, grungy rock & roll)
-A community of poeple they dont follow any formula, but rather ļ¬nd their style from the
records they listen to, typically underground
-By 1990 Soundgarden ā€” all signed to major labels to achieve relative indie success
Nirvana ā€” formed in 1987
-Signs with Sub Pop, but later signs with DGC Records in 1990 with Nevermind (1991)
ā€œSmells Like Teen Spiritā€
-Soft verses, with a loud chorus
-Straight power cords
-There is never a change of harmony ā€” forever using the same two chords
