1990s Festivals
Early Rock Festivals
-Pre 1967 â Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals (models for future rock festivals)
-1967 â Monterey Pop Festival
-1969 â Woodstock Music and Art Fair
-1968-1970 â Isle of Wight Festivals
-Single location concert held in one day or weekend (Isle of Wight & Bumbershoot) are
distinct to a particular locations annually
Touring Festivals of the 1990s â summer festivals were linked to different crowds, genres,
attitudes and started off with little affair
Lollapalooza â ïŹrst touring concert festival
-Started in 1991 by Perry Ferrell who was inspired by The Gathering of the Tribes (one day
festival)
-Brought together various kinds of music along with cultural, political themes â charity event
-Ferrell wanted it to be a cultural trappings â âtravelling circusâ
-Today Lollapalooza isnât any-longer a travelling festival, as now it just runs in Chicago, but
there are ïŹve other international sites. No longer travels due to expense issues
-Lollapalooda: Hip Hop (Ice Cube), Grunge (Pearl Jam), Old school pubk (The Ramones)
-All these genres had a level of anti-establishment perspectives. Oppositionality,
marginalization, Alternative NationâŠbroad concepts of sounds but donât appeal to the
mainstream audience
