MUAR 211 – The Art of Listening – Jerry Cain Winter 2013 March 12 , 2013  Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) o known for being a conductor o conductor with prolific career in Vienna & spent season at New York Metropolitan Opera o considered Austrian composer but born & raised in Czech Republic o famous for maximalist symphony orchestras used by many late Romantic composers o had large, non-traditional orchestration o never composed an opera o considered an outsider o made fun of for the way that he conducted  he was very animated  performance practice was one of the most important parts of modernism  attach maximalism to him  he takes something and expands it  his orchestra was fairly large with a chorus in the back o expands with more numbers of each instrument + introduced new instruments o keyboard instruments introduced o many percussion instruments o xylophone, glockenspiel & pitched percussion are introduced  non-traditional scoring: o woodwinds  4 flutes, 3 clarinets, 3 bassoons o brass  6 horns, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba o percussion  timpani, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, triangle, tam-tam, whip, glockenspiel o strings  harp, violins I
