General characteristics of art music in the past century (or so) Often marked by great individuality of expression and technical approach, resulting in a great diversity of concurrent styles and paths" of exploration, some more radical than others. Many composers developed individual systems of harmony and methods of composition: microtonality microtonal music aleatory aleatoric music (indeterminacy, chance, etc. ) New emphasis on rhythm and rhythmic possibilities, often resulting in complex rhythmic relationships a trend at least partially attributable to the influence of non-western" music (i. e. , the world music" of china, japan, indonesia, africa, latin america, etc. The search for new sound sources was manifested in two main areas: (1) the creation of new instruments: percussion, electronic, and unconventional instruments; (2) the exploration of new uses for traditional, art-music" instruments: extended techniques. The creative manipulation of classical forms and genres continues, occasionally resulting in works defying all previous genre descriptions.
