There were many specific varieties (i. e. , genres) and national styles of opera composed in the. 19th century, but they break down into two basic types, serious and comic. The terms for these basic genres of italian and french opera are: opera seria (italian) & grand opera (of french origin) = genres of comic opera: exotic animals opera buffa (italian) & op ra comique (french, ballets and other dances, crowd scenes, machinery, choruses, extravagant sets and costumes. Of the above genres, only the french op ra comique used spoken dialogue; the other three use recitatives (as well as arias, duets, trios, etc. , of course) and never contain spoken dialogue. Note that the following very famous scene from. A da contains no singing, but rather provides a setting for the use of animals, exotic costumes, and dancing ( dance of the moorish slaves begins at 1:31).
