Many types of vision loss: cataracts. Can cause cloudy vision (wrong refraction of light) or total blindness based on opacity. Half the blindness worldwide, third of visual impairment: around 50% of n. -americans approximately get cataracts by age. Exposure to sunlight reading glasses during the critical period. Easily treated, however, current lenses don"t accommodate and subject needs. Cataracts in children can cause cortical blindness for one eye if they develop. During the critical period for vision, neurons in layer 4 of v1 are still establishing connectivity and: glaucoma their vision, macular degeneration. Gradual damage to retinal ganglion cells and the optic nerve. Usually begins in the periphery and people don"t notice until they lose a lot of. Cause is suspected to be due to too much pressure on inside of the eye. Degeneration of the fovea and macula and affects high-resolution central vision. Usa: age-related macular degeneration (amd) is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 55.
