Document Summary

One of the goals of nursing is to help individuals/families use their strengths and their external resources to help them cope with life challenges, achieve their goals and develop. Characteristics of strengths: strengths are developing entities. Born with strengths & develop over lifetime for example, celine dion had a gift and developed her voice over the time: strengths can be developed through learning. Tiger woods needed some practice to get where he is now: strengths coexist with weaknesses and vulnerabilities. For example, a shy child: he/she is shy at school which can be seen as a weakness and is willing to work on it despite his/her good grades and asks for help to his/her teacher (which is a strength). Patients tell nurses what is wrong with them and some nurses focus only on what is wrong and do not focus/explore what is good. : strengths are related to goals.
