The meninges are the 3 tissue layers that protect it the pia mater, arachnoid mater, and dura mater. The nervous system is bathed in csf. Any inflammation or edema in this system is devastating leads to tissue infarction, and permanent neurologic sequelae or death. This is because the space is not large, and not much movement can occur. The subarachnoid space, epidural space, and subdural space are where abscesses tend to develop because there is blood supply there. Csf is produced at a rate of 25 ml/hour in the choroid plexus of the ventricles on the roof of the third ventricle, or the floor of the fourth ventricle. The epithelial cells lining the blood vessels in the brain are less permeable than the blood vessels.
