Objectives part 1: to explain the pathophysiology of pain, to list the different types of pain, with examples, to describe pain assessment evidence-based tools, to describe the nursing roles and responsibilities in pain assessment. It is not realistic to aim for 0/10 pain. The only time a patient has no pain is when they are in the or under general anaesthesia. They are a great tool that should be used properly. They are meant to activate people: remember that pain is the 5th vital sign, and is meant to move people towards health. We want to get people out of our institutions with a safe amount of analgesia. Definition of pain: there exist many different definitions of pain, pain is complex and nursing researchers defined it as whatever the experiencing person says it is, which is key because it is such a subjective experience.
