NUR1 223 Lecture 1: Physical & Cognitive DEVELOPMENT IN EARLY ADULTHOOD
Document Summary
Senescence: = biological aging, influences, genetic, lifestyle, environment, historical period, war, diseases (factors affect rate of aging, average lifespan increased 20 25 years over past century, multidimensional and multidirectional. Biological aging begins in early adulthood: biological aging takes place on several levels, whole organism, system level, cell level, dna level, wear-and-tear theory, body wears out from use. Theories of biological aging: at the dna-cellular level, current explanations of biological aging are of two types, 1. Programmed effects of specific genes: existence of aging genes that control biological changes (i. e. menopause, grey hair, deterioration of boyd cells, special type of dna called telomere shortens, eventually, cells no longer duplicate, makes dna more vulnerable, 2. Motor performance in adulthood: athletic skills peak between ages 20 and 35, decline gradually until sixties or seventies, then faster, continuing to train slows loss in motor capacity, keep more vital capacity, muscle, response speed.
