NUR1 239 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Eustachian Tube, Antitragus, Antihelix
Document Summary
Lobule, tragus, helix, external auditory meatus, antitragus, antihelix. The tympanic membrane separates the external ear and middle ear. It is translucent, pearly grey in which a prominent cone of light in the anteroinferior quadrant. The tympanic membrane is oval and slightly concave, pulled in at its center by the malleus. It contains tiny bones: malleus, incus and stapes. Middle ear has a few openings; one to the inner ear and one to the eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear with the nasopharynx. Conduct sound vibration from outer ear to the central hearing apparatus in the inner ear. Protect the inner ear by reducing the amplitude of the sound. Eustachian tubes allow equalization of air pressure on each side of the tympanic membrane so that the membrane does not rupture. A conductive hearing loss involves mechanical dysfunction of the external or middle ear.
