Oct. 24&26 - immunity in transplantation and pregnancy. Mhc: 1) binds peptide frag of ag present to apc. 2) mhc = genetic gene complex to accept / reject transplanted tissue (from another member of same species) Transplantation: transferring cell, tissue, organs form 1 site to another from one individual to another. Rejection caused by response to alloantigen: hla (human) and h2 (mice) Abo & hla matching: has to consider bld (diff grouping) 3 major advances for organ transplantation in clinic: Make sure organs available are hla-typed & matched with patient. Transplantation problems: availability; disease may destroy patient organ; immunosuppressive drug increase risk of cancer and infection. Pig (almost the same size), come with infection (which is diff from human); bacteria in human and pig are diff. Study of skin transplantation: syngeneic graft (=autograft) is not rejected; reject quickly by allogenic recipient; not fast rejection of minor ags loci (ex. Histocompatibility ag encoded by male y chromosome not expressed in female)
