PATH 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Restrictive Lung Disease, Obstructive Lung Disease, Cystic Fibrosis
Document Summary
Diseases of the respiratory system: part 2 (dr. baglole) Obstructive lung diseases are conditions that make it hard to exhale all the air from the lungs and makes it harder to breathe, especially during increased activity or exertion. People with restrictive lung disease have a much more difficult time filling their lungs with air. This can be a result of the lungs being restricted from fully expanding. Copd is: a common preventable and treatable disease, characterized by persistent airflow limitation that is usually progressive, associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airways and the lung. Traditional copd classification: chronic bronchitis - clinical definition. Mucus production leading to cought for 3 consecutive months in at least 2 consecutive years. Characterized by excessive mucus production and inflammation: emphysema. Recall the description of how the epithelium changes from the conducting to the respiratory zone: in the larger airways, there are glands which change in someone with chronic bronchitis.
