PHGY 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Hyperkinetic Disorder, Movement Disorder, Cerebral Cortex
Document Summary
Problem with the descending pathways of the motor system will stop the inhibition of the activity of the muscles, so you get too much muscle reflex and muscle contraction. If there is a problem with motor neurons, there is a decrease or missing reflexes. Involved with the involuntary component of the muscle control. Helps to determine the specific sequence of movements needed to accomplish a desired action. Basal nuclei are collections of cell bodies that are sitting within each brain cortex. (see lecture 2) Basal nuclei is helping you do things you don"t notice until something goes wrong. Reduced dopamine input to the basal nuclei, which makes its activity to go down. There is no cure for parkinson"s, but there is some treatments, such as medication to increase the dopamine concentration in the brain. The problem with this treatment is that dopamine is used in many different places of the brain other than the basal nuclei.
