Document Summary

#1 function of respiration = gas exchange -> mammals lungs used for gas exchange. Expiration = co2- produced during oxidative processes of. > cardiovascular/blood + respiratory system= supply body cells with o2 & eliminate waste product co2: respiratory tract. *nasal turbinates/concha = surfaces that clean air of big dust particles. Lungs (r= 3 lobes & l= 2 lobes) shares chest cavity with heart/great vessels/esophagus. *alveolus = where gas exchange occurs - capillaries surround alveoli. Respiration process = voluntary -> brain send signal to respiratory muscles to contract. > diaphragm & intercostal muscles enlarge size of chest & rib cage. Name of branches - subdivisions of conducting airways & terminal respiratory units. Pleura= thin cell sheet attached to thoracic cage interior (parietal) or lung surface (visceral) *pleura fold back itself -> form 2 enclosed pleural sacs in thoracic cage between lungs & ribcage. Small amount of intra-pleural fluid -> couples lungs to chest for breathing (like 2 slides with water)
