PHGY 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Farad, The Delay
Document Summary
An individual synapse creates only a small amount of depolarization so a neuron has to summate many synapses together. How close in time should the two synapses come to the neuron in order to summate and increase the depolarization. Ion channels at rest provide a resistance to any synaptic current. When a synapse operates, it opens channels, ions flow through with a certain rate described as the current. This current must flow in a closed circuit. The input resistance plays a role in how much depolarization there will be. Replace the synapse with an electrode to control the amount of current influx. The resistor and the capacitor in parallel slow the response after injecting current. Inject negative current hyperpolarize the cell but not instantaneously because the current first go through the capacitor. It reaches a plateau after a certain time course. The delay in the response can be calculated by knowing the time course of the changes.
