PHIL 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Harry Collins, Data Analysis
Document Summary
He is of the founders of the sociology of scienti c knowledge (ssk) This type of science believes that scienti c claims are in uenced by social factors. He spent over 40 years with other scientist too look for gravitational waves. They are deformities in space times which follow einstein"s theory. Einstein predicted that if massive bodies accelerated, they would create waves in the fabric of space. These waves aren"t visible but they change the distance between two things. These waves travel at light speed while carrying energy following einstein"s theory. The energy from these waves decreases the further away we are form the source of these waves. They are expected to be dif cult to detect since they are very weak. Detectors were built in the 1950"s to detect these waves. A very sensitive detector is needed to detect these waves and many other disturbances might change these results by being picked up by the detector.
