You only talk about a non-entity when you talk about it
We have philosophy of language because we want to show that things aren’t the way they
appear to be
The aim is how to solve questions with the tools of language and logic
We analyze such that the problem goes away
‘The elimination of metaphysics by means of logic’ – title of a work published in early
analytic philosophy
The problem
Quantifying attitudes ascriptions = If his theory of how it is that we can analyze of saying
that someone that he or she believes so and so
You can’t have direct access to an object; you can only have direct access to the contents
with your own mind

If this is true, then we are only acquainted with Platonic (abstract) properties
A name is a disguised descriptions
You learn a name by learning how to identify their name
The only true names are not names at all
You can only know by acquaintance only to something that you can directly point to
The only truly properly name is this *point*
This is a book (Wittgenstein’s) that will not try to justify itself
It’s not didactic
It does not try to convince us step by step
Nietzsche says something like, I’m writing only for the free spirits who are already of the
same mind
“What we cannot talk about” – he means that what we shouldn’t talk about philosophies
that we cannot because we can never know about them since they are illogical, since the
denotations have no meaning
It’s impossible to say anything meaningful about these things
He’s talking about virtually all of philosophy
He tries to say what cannot be said s
He seems like an anti-philosophy philosopher, but he is not
There have been anti-philosophy philosophers
It’s a book about ethics but only says why you can’t say anything about ethics
Kierkegaard – “Faith begins where reason ends”
Faith is a completely independent unjustifiable thing
We cannot stand from the point of view of eternity and say; these are the limits of human
thought. We cannot draw the limits of human thought since we are in human thought
“Sub specie aeternitatis” – he will later use this term
