South-South Relations
Global leadership by southern countries:

• When western countries have come to the global south countries with the agenda of
assisting development – critics say it represents neo-colonialism
o Brazil/India/SA are former colonies themselves
o China was on the receiving end of powers attempts at exploitation
o So this legitimises these countries
• Brazil recently went through its own transition to democracy, and is therefore in a
better position to assist other contemporary democratic transitions
Brazil:
• Sought to be on the UN Security Council – there are no latin American countries on the
council
• Free-market economy and growing economy has made nation seek more influence of
WTO
• Trying to strike a balance between the market capitalism of the US as well as the hard-
line socialist inspired policies of Venezuela
• Brazil has built a global development vision built around human security
o Expanding access to essential resources for the poorest members of society
India:
• Originally India has been a key bed-rock member of Visions of South-South solidarity
o This a e traed all the ay ak to Idia’s PM Nehru eig oe of the
founding members of the non-aligned movement
• This movement had a huge role in generating networks of solidarity
• India is now a net creditor to the IMF
• It contributes to the World Food Programme
• It is a major contributor of troops to the UN forces
• India has a growing role on the African continent
• India exemplified this trend by holding a special India-Africa cooperation session
o This has led to the increase in trade with India
• India has strategic interests in the Indian Ocean basin
o Seeking to counter the influence of Pakistan and China
o This is’t oly a atter of ireasig a eooi ad politial presee
o It also is a matter of increasing military power
• Africa is also a target for Indian food security objectives
