How the demand of pakistan came to be. First demand was by the all indian muslim league. Separate political identity, meaning muslims would be a permanent minority. India act gave muslims the right to have separate electorates. Mohammed ali asked for endorsement of an all muslim state in the north. Argued that a transfer of power would have to see a dissolving of the colonial power established by british rule. When it gained momentum, the nationalist party had to address issues that had never been touched before (e. g. treatment of the untouchables) Ghandi"s main contribution was the idea of non-violent civil disobedience. He represented the peasants, which had never happened before. Made an extra effort to not alienate any religions or castes. Key weakness of the congress party: failed to come to a settlement regarding minority representation. Talking about a larger partition which happened within the continent. Idea of 3 partitions is more metaphorical than literal.
