India had the basic features of democracy for all but two years since independence: even when there was democracy, sometimes it was seriously curtailed wherever there were armed insurgents i. e. northeast india (nadaland), punjab. Secessionist autonomous unrest: pakistan, over the last twenty years, there has been a maoist insurgency from nepali borders to much of north and central india to south-central india. Weak democracy because they haven"t yet agreed on a constitution. Maoists have come and gone in the government a lot. Balance of power between nobility and the crown (pre-modern state) before a sovereign state gets really formed and becomes centralized. Strong town dweller class (bourgeoisie: will work with the nobility. Transformation or extinction of peasantry: landlords will want the peasantry to not get the vote to kick them out, don"t want the peasants free, peasants were prone to supporting romantic anti-capitalism, fascism in japan, communism in russia/china.
