There are hundreds of legal traditions around the world, while they are generally classified under the umbrella terms of common and civil (i. e. , different legal tradition per us state) During major socialist states there was socialist law. Legal tradition is a set of deeply rooted, historically conditioned attitudes about the nature of law, about the role in society and the polity. Common law begun in 1066 a. d. when the normans defeated the hastings, conquering england. The expansion of england resulted in the spreading of common law to, Came with the emergence of england as a nation-state. Civil law is the oldest of the two, its origins dating back to 450 b. c. Now a dominant legal tradition in europe, latin america, asia and africa. Many believe civil law to be superior to common law.
