Democracy has become the main rhetoric for us influence. Us working with palestinians to combat terrorism. Some sort of move for talks with hamas is necessary. Democracy promotion = obvious reason for their support because of their rhetoric. It was a challenge for israel to engage with the new democracies. Us support for mubarak was to avoid the ascendance of extremist parties such as the muslim brotherhood. Us supports non-democracies as well saudi arabia. Not critical of bahrain (they have other interests in the region: diplomatic un, some perceive a bias in the un (especially in the 70s) against israel. The us perspective tried to balance that by standing up for israel in the security council: unga resolutions are willing to condemn israel, its harder for unsc resolutions to condemn israel (us uses diplomatic weight there) Sometimes in problematic ways: military/intelligence, 1970s shift in us-israel relations. Instead of trying to balance cold war, now working with israel.
