Bayly: approaches to caste & nation / rao: dalits + public access. Pick a topic connected to major themes: inequality between identity groups. Can"t be too broad or too similar to syllabus readings: us and india. Aim for it, but page or two below, no problem. Not 1 correct way to go about it. Low risk approach: lay out main question/phenomenon in brief, indicate what arguments you are making, 3 or so theories applied to it, assess/explore in how effective in explaining outcomes looking at. Short essay questions not in advanced: more writing, more material. Approaches to caste & nation in colonial india: maj. indian views & initiatives regarding caste. Indian nationalism & caste inequalities: major indian views of caste. Bayly: roles of diff. castes in public life and nationalist mobilization. Agrees with dirks (colonial rule had major impact, change way caste operated in society, made more important and central) Had own way of responding to what colonizers did.
