Contentious politics & social movements: similarities: Both are political, involving power (relationship doesn"t need state involvement necessarily) Both are largely outside of institutionalized politics (e. g. parties, government, lawful legal actions, certain interest groups, clientelism: institutionalized (normal) politics expression of political differences through stable/established channels and organizations. Unconstitutional & highly con ictive politics : differences: Social movements: sustained interactions between state and others ( at least one-side of negotiation involves the state) (1) classic model of sm: european tradition of class-based analysts (marxist) > class exploitation & maternal incentives, american tradition of individual/psychological analysis > feeling of isolation/ displacement (often youth, socioeconomic context: fast (socioeconomic or political) transformation. E. g. > emergence of market/capitalism/globalization: similarities between euro/american traditions: Sm as linear process: discontent leads to sms.
