MODERNIZATION AND DEPENDENCY THEORIES
Strong vs Weak States
Criteria according to which we can judge:
- Degree of State sovereignty
- Level of institutional centralization
- Level of monopoly over the use of force
- Legitimacy and Effectiveness
Is a state able to deliver? Fix shit etc
Capacity to assert control, not only people, but also over areas with wealth etc
This is not a binary, its on a continuum.
Even strong states have weak points.
Max Weber: The state is that force that has the monopoly over the legitimate use of force
- Gangs?
Effectiveness is an objective measurement. Like a yes or no question.
Legitimacy is subjective. Do the citizens see the gov as legitimate?
What historical factors determine this?
- Trajectory of state formation. Shaped by colonialism and war?
- Degree of economic inequality
- Level of cohesion between the state and Nation - ethnic and religious diversity.
