POLI 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Economic Migrant, Diminished Responsibility, Corporatism
Document Summary
Assumed that state is sovereign -> peace of westphalia. Eu is examined through the lens of sovereignty. Globalization: driven by change, first technological, then economic, political, societal. Interconnected and interdependence means that problems are global in scale. Populism a response to diminished capacity of states. Free flowing capital, open trade constrain gov"ts" policy options and tax revenues. Companies have more influence, whether bc of overseas opportunities or their role in modernizing domestic economies. Erosion of corporatist decision-making model, transfer of decision-making to supranational institutions. Emigration from europe completely reversed within a few short decades. Reconstruction after the war required cheap labour; fall of the iron curtain opened the door to europe. Economic migrants subsumed by illegal human trafficking, war torn & failed states. Populism, already reacting against globalization, has increasingly reacted against immigration. Add in random terrorist attacks, faltering welfare states, and europe faces a serious crisis.
