Majority of gdp was not in europe + america until mid 19th century. Despite actual inequalities, a lot of progress has been made in the last 200 years or so. The world is experiencing both inequality and improvement at the same time. Third world : first used as political term in cold war, now means developing world. Third world countries : not accurate, all different. Nic : newly industrialised countries, ex : taiwan. Hdi : human development index (0 to 1, 1 = good) Gini coefficient : measure of inequality (0 to 1, 0= equal) Ldc : least/less developed countries, ex : ethiopia. Ppp gives better sense of purchasing power than gdp, because of income inequality ( many can be poor even though gdp is high) Approaches to the study of third world politics. Problems of national integration, lack of common identity. Imperatives of state-building ; emerge in independence with lack of training and skills to develop.
