Ethnic wars are more frequent than inter- nation wars. Since the end of the cold war, the world"s attention has focused increasingly on ethnic clashes. Predictions that poor, densely populated countries will experience increased ethnic clashes. Ldc"s: more ethnically diverse, less able governments. Ethnic identity is a social construction: belief in a common descent, created and embellished. Ethnic groups are usually not socially homogeneous or politically united class, ideology or religion divided them. Some ethnic classifications were initially imposed by outsiders. Ethnic consciousness creates barriers between groups. Nation boundaries and state boundaries fail to coincide. Types of ethnic- cultural divisions. Tribe: tribe: subnational groups that share a collective identitiy and language and believe themselves to hold a common lineage.
