There is culture, ethnicity, politics of competition (cannot be reduced to economics) Trade unions looked at this as situation of means of production and jobs, disregarded effect gender might have in workplace. Focuses on economics as either good or bad. Does not consider exceptions like taiwan (trade was a big part of their success) Assumes that change in international economy is necessary and sufficient (problem: must change politics and society domestically as well) There are alternative development paths (south cannot develop same way as north)
