The importance of colonialism for the politics of the developing world. 1921: 84% of the world was colonized. The importance of sovereignty in the international system. Kind of problematic because the countries who start exercising this sovereignty might be abusive or unable to lead a country efficiently. How should we understand its long term impact o o o. Every colony is impacted in some sort of way. Variation (nature of pre-colonial society, patterns of colonization, including different colonizers) Latin america: the conquest largely complete within 30-70 years: aztecs: 95% decline in population by 1605 (24 million people) o. Incas: at least a 50% decline in population within 40 years. Slave trade compensates -- so bad, labour had to be imported. Disruption of social networks and destruction of symbols of religion. Eliminating not only people, but a way of life and everything it represented.
