Mill has arguments about why the subordination of women is bad for both society and women.
He states that the denial of women leads to women being underdeveloped. He asks how women
can perform charity, in which they teach independence to the poor, when they are dependent
themselves. In the family, men are taught to worship themselves; this self-worship is a problem
in the family, which does not lead to social change. Mill locates despotism in the family, and he
thinks that what happens in the family is a reflection of what happens in society.
According to Mill, the ideal relationship is a friendship between equals, but in this point in time,
women play the role of upper servants or mistresses. They are not equals who can make
decisions. Mill states the men will resist a change to this particularly those men who have less
political power and economic power and therefore want the subordination of their wives.
As we throw out social hierarchies, Mill believes we will see individuals employing themselves
more will be possible
Believes women will become untethered
Mill is an advocate for women’s rights and self-development
P185: Mill also states that when a woman marries, she makes a career choice to manage the
household and children
He states that women should not choose to do something that conflicts with this
responsibility
He does not say that they can’t do anything else
He does not say this about men but they are supposedly equals
Mill can be seen as a proponent of feminism. He subscribes to the public/ private sphere, but
also obeys some social hierarchy.
History raises the question: if patriarchy goes, will liberalism go with it?
What unifies the different types of feminism is the desire to liberate women from
subordination they see different reasons for the subordination and describe different
remedies
Pateman:
Liberalism: individualist and egalitarian
P120: Liberalism has produced some progress to the fight against the subordination of
women there has been an extension of rights
However, liberalism has some work to do, such as in the case of the public/ private
distinction
- We must think of these realms as closely related
- The distinction is ambiguous and feminists argue about where the line is between
them, and if there should be a line at all
One way to think about the dichotomy between the public and private is to think about the
distinction between the state and the individual:
