Memory & Language
Cont'd - Patient HM
• Global Anterograde Amnesia
o Any kind of memory test - free recall, cued recall, yes/no recognition, multiple-
choice recognition etc.
o Any kind of stimulus material - ords, digits, paragraphs, pseudo ords, shapes…
o Any sensory modality - mostly vision
• Other facts about him
o Normal IQ Score, language, visual abilities, attention, STM
o Problem in transferring knowledge to his LTM (long-term memory)
• Explicit vs. Implicit Memory
o Over time he got better
o Procedural memory - memory for motor skills/operations that are not easily
recollected consciously (being able to ride a bike after years)
• HM was able to learn to use a walker in his old age
o Implicit - procedural, priming, conditioning, habituation
o Explicit - semantic, episodic
• Priming effect - increase in the speed or accuracy of a response as a consequence of a
prior exposure without any intention or task related motivation
• Explicit or Declarative Memory
o Episodic memory - when and where
o Semantic memory - what
• HM's legacy
o Memory is not unitary - declarative/explicit vs. no declarative/implicit
o Memory is process with multiple stages
Case of LSJ - Lonnie Sue Johnson
• Each case is very different
• Graphic artist/pilot, had previous abilities
Language - Lesion Studies
• Paul Broca - saw a patient in a hospital in Paris - this patient had problems speaking after a
stroke
• Broca's aphasia - cannot form sentences, but used correct words, trying to convey a
message
• Wernicke's aphasia - different patient, slurred, formed sentences
Aphasias
• An impairment in the reception or expression of the symbolic content of language due to
brain damage
o Broca's/no influent
• Non fluent speech - halting - slow and slurred
• Repetitions
• Increases ration of content vs function words
