Attitudes and Behaviours
• Overall attitudes are low predictors of actual behaviours
• Except when
o They are easily accessible in memory
o They are firmly held and stable over time
o They vitally affect our interests
Cognitive Dissonance Theory
• The unpleasant state when attitudes are in conflict with our behaviour
• A powerful motive to maintain cognitive consistency can give rise to irrational and
sometimes maladaptive behaviour
Social Influence
• Conformity - changing one's behaviour or beliefs in response to explicit or implicit
pressure from others
• Obedience - changing one's behaviour or beliefs in response to the demands of a more
powerful person
• Compliance - changing ones behaviour or beliefs to avoid conflict
Social Facilitation
• Social loafing
• Groupthink - when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressures lead to a
deterioration of "mental efficiency, reality testing and moral judgment
Inhibitory IPSP
• Dampens activity
• Learning memory sleep
• Anti anxiety drugs bind GABA
