Definition of Abnormal Behaviour
• Statistical rarity
• Subjective distress
• Impairment/ maladaptive behaviour
• Societal disapproval / deviation from an ideal
• Biological dysfunction
• Need for treatment
• Loss of control over one's behaviour
• Irrationality
• Age gender and culture must be taken into account **
Culture Bound Syndromes
• Amok - Malaysia - violent behaviour
• Evil eyes - being cursed by a glance of a malicious person
• CULTURE shapes what symptoms are expressed
• CULTURE influences the meanings given to the symptoms
Historical perspective
• Demonic model
o Odd behaviours were the result of evil spirits inhabiting the body exorcisms and
witch hunts were common during this time
• Medical model
o Asylums were created
• Overflowed understaffed
o Treatments were no better
• Bloodletting and snake pits
• Moral treatment
