Rather than explaining human behaviours, early instinct theorists were simply naming them. Drive-reduction theory: idea that a physiological need creates an aroused tensions state (negative drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need. Physiological need increases, physiological drive increases, an aroused and motivated state focuses on inner pushes and external pulls interaction need food drive with hunger drive reducing behaviour such as eating. Homeostasis: tendency to maintain a balanced and constant internal state, regulation of any aspect of body chemistry, eg. blood glucose at a particular level.
