PSYC 213 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Autobiographical Memory, Long-Term Memory, Episodic Memory
Document Summary
Researcher asked people to draw a bicycle from memory. People weren(cid:495)t really able to draw a bike correctly. E. g. , how the pedals are attached to a bike was drawn differently across participants. This is because the brain doesn(cid:495)t store memories as literal copies. Rather, when we remember, the brain reconstructs what needs to be recalled. It is more of a sort of artistic representation. Some aspect of memory is involved in everything you do. Think about what would happen if you had no memory Everybody would be a stranger, every task you do would seem new, and communication would be virtually impossible. Each of these stages come with their own sets of questions we can ask about how memory works. If we pay attention to what is in sensory memory, then this information can move to short term/working memory. If we attend to what is in short term memory, it can move to long-term memory.
