We define attention nowadays as the method for actively selecting and monitoring information. Early selection models that suggest that we filter early on processing. Support for these models use dichotic listening tasks and shadowing experiments. Other models suggest that the filter happens later in processing. People are asked to name the color of ink of the color name. People are slower when there is a mismatch between the ink and the color name. The load theory: demanding tasks are going to determine when we filter out information. If we have a task that is not so demanding, we will be more open to process more distracting information--> attention going to act as it has a late filter.
