Prejudice:
Prejudice refers to the negative attitudes and associated behaviors
towards people that belong to certain groups.
Prejudice has three components:
- Cognitive: Stereotypes: a generalization about a group in which
identical characteristics are assigned to all members of the group.
- Emotional: A hostile or negative orientation toward people in a
distinguishable group.
- Behavioral: Discrimination: Negative behaviors directed against
persons because of their membership in a particular group.
Categorization: Our mind’s effort to try to simplify all the varied people
that we encounter in our life. Stereotyping is an example of
categorization.

Race and Gender Stereotypes:
- Racial Stereotypes: primarily descriptive
- Gender Stereotypes: descriptive as well as prescriptive.
Benevolent Sexism:
All the positive attitudes that we usually prescribe
women in our society with.
Example: warm, nurturing, friendly, fragile, etc.
Hostile Sexism:
All the negative attitudes that we usually prescribe
women in our society with.
Example: less intelligent, less competent, less brave, less
capable at math and science.

Some research suggests that stereotypes can influence our perception in a very automatic fashion. A study asking to judge the heights of men and women.
