Document Summary

Slide 48: concept receiving most attention: sensitization (previously defined as opposite of habituation) In most scenarios, there is habituation; the longer the stimulus, the longer you perceive stimulus, you think that the intensity decreases even though intensity has not changed. Fridge and hum where you think noise decreases--> this doesn"t occur for pain. Better definition: nervous system is sensitized such that it amplifies any input that comes in. Process by which stimuli of the same intensity could lead to greater perception o. Can be used to explain hypo and hyperalgesia and allodynia but not for spontaneous pain. We got so good at explaining sensitization, that we didn"t go far at looking at spontaneous pain. Peripheral and central sensitization: where the sensitization occurring (cns or pns). Sensitization could occur in cell bodies of primary afferents found in the periphery but this would be called central sensitization.
