In midterm 1 notes: preoperational period (ages 2-6/7, major gain was symbolic representation, the use of an object, word, or thought to stand for another, using a playing card as an iphone, egocentrism. Perceive the world solely from one"s own perspective. Communication: take the one that looks like mommy"s hat . Spatially: reference with regards to oneself: piaget"s three-mountain task. Child sits facing the scene with a doll on the other side of the scene. Shows the child different angles and ask the child which one does dolly see? . They"ll pick the scene that they see, not the one that the dolly would be seeing: centration. Overly focused on one dimension or characteristic and do not notice others. Notes for midterm 2: children lack the mental operators that are needed to consider the relations between different sets of properties. Compensation: a change in one dimension compensates for a change in another dimension.
