PSYC 331 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Chris Rock, Stereotype Threat, Black Kids
Document Summary
Prejudices are emotional reactions, either positive or negative: prejudice is an individual measure. Stereotype = concensus among members of one group about the attributes of another group. As long as social psychology has existed, stereotypes have been a topic. Originates in the printing world stereotype = printing of the same thing over and over again. Truly a group phenomena (not like an attitude or prejudice, which are individual differences) > concensus. Ex. people able to laugh at a joke at the expense of a particular group only because it"s a stereotype/view we all share. Some theorists stated that it is the personality of another group that"s the topic of stereotype, but taylor says attitudes are more accurate because it"s a broader scope. Chris rock: you know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy . > why is this crazy? because there"s a collectively-held view that only black people can rap.
