Document Summary
An olympic athlete who is now a spokesperson for mental health. The reason that she"s involved in this effort is because she suffered with depression for most of her life. She"s one of the last people you would think suffered with depression. She has an ideal personality - she"s extroverted, open, conscientious. At the age of 22 she was diagnosed with major depression and decided not to take drugs, instead she went to counselling. Rates of depression are increasing every year and people are getting diagnosed earlier on. Depression is treatable and sometimes it resolves on its own: there are effective psychotherapies and medication. Once you"ve had a depressive episode you"re at a much higher risk to have another one - you have to focus on relapse prevention. Cognitive - lose interest in doing things. Behavioural - want to sleep all the time or can"t sleep at all. The majority of people with depression go untreated.
