Most people would like to be on a certain end of the big 5, we usually think about ourselves compared to the people we know. Natural to use the big 5 to compare people, however, not only way to think about it. Cross role variation in big 5 personality traits. With friends or with significant other and then told to rate their traits again instead of in comparison to other people, its more within-person variability. Can look at the variability in trait scores has to do with between people comparisons and within person comparisons- can be estimated with percentage.
