PSYC 337 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Determinism, Antipsychotic, Ignaz Semmelweis
Document Summary
Rosenhan study that emphasized importance of description, it created great turmoil in the psychiatric world. Not a study, just a demo. (there was no control group). The patients lied, they made up that they heard the voices. Some people viewed it as horrible that the psychiatrists believed that the people heard voices and that they were diagnosed/hospitalized and given drugs but none of that is the issue. If a patient comes to you because they are seeking help, it is your job to help them. What you know how to do is diagnose and if they fit the criterion at the time, which they did, hearing voices=schizophrenia, it no longer does but it did. The psychiatrist believing them isn"t bad, they had too- we have fictious disorder patients(people fake mental illnesses), it is equivalent to moonchowses disease- where people fake a physical illness, or by proxy where they fake it by their children.
